Every so often I like to build a roadmap of thoughts - generally geared to a 6-9 months outlook on the economy as a whole. This is actually a good check for me because it forces me to consistently update my thoughts and create very broad thesis that I want to have a lot of belief in before I present them to readers. It also serves as a good historical data point so as readers come to the blog later in it’s life they can see we have not just been throwing random darts and getting lucky but there

Oh no, it’s coming! Believe us, it’s coming!
July 15th, 2008 · No Comments
(or, Dude, who stole my recession?) On January 15, Tom Stinson, Minnesota state economist, said there was no doubt the state was in a recession. In May, he had not changed his mind. On that basis the state issued a forecast for the budget that led to the closing of a tax loophole, a few minor spending cuts, and the rest of the money coming from reserve accounts. As Phil Krinkie pointed out last month, there was very little spending cuts. I had argued for more reliance on the reserve because I h

July 11th, 2008 · No Comments
When the government first proposed its tax rebate scheme last January, many were quick to point out the money was not ultimately, despite the signature on the check, a payment from the US government, but a loan from abroad, largely from Japan and China. Now that we can confidently anticipate the consensus will quickly form around the presumptive necessity of a bailout of that economically distressed couple Freddie and Fannie, it’s worth noting who is ultimately being bailed out here: The top fiv

But just the other day, John McCain’s economic adviser Phil Gramm called all Americans, including me, “whiners” because we seem to have economic recessional delusions and just can’t seem to understand that really, everything is A-OK, you know? Never mind that the price of oil has streaked like a Photoshopped Irania

One of the options I’m considering for a real estate investment is to rent out my current house and buy another place I’ll enjoy more. My current place fits perfect as a long term rental property based on the research I’ve done so far, and a new house will give me the opportunity to do some
